Carers Emergency Card Scheme

The Carers Emergency Card is an orange, credit card sized card that is carried by carers. It is used as an instant source of identification in case the carer has an accident when they are out. The registration number and telephone number on the card are linked to a database at the Sefton Control Centre, where help can be co-ordinated to assist the cared for person, while the carer is receiving attention.

Why was the scheme developed?

Carers expressed uncertainty and concern about what would happen if they were out alone and they had an accident. Some carers carried a piece of paper explaining their situation, but still felt unsupported. They expressed the need to have a co-ordinated system of response that did not totally rely on their neighbours or relatives.

How does it operate?

A carer can register with the Scheme by completing an application form, which can be obtained from either social services or from Sefton Carers Centre. The application form requests information about the person to be cared for, such as where they live, what agencies are already involved and who would be able to help in an emergency. This is to ensure that care can be co-ordinated by the appropriate people as and when necessary for times when the carer is unavailable. These details are entered on a computerised database and the carer is then issued with a laminated card.

Carers are encouraged to carry it in a prominent place and keep it with them at all times.

The only numbers on the card are the lifeline telephone number and the registration number.

In an emergency a call is received, and the control centre will respond by co-ordinating assistance for the cared for person. This might include getting in touch with the next of kin, out of hours services or the emergency services if necessary.
