Advocacy consists of: “ taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain services they need. Advocates and advocacy schemes work in partnership with the people they support and take their side. Advocacy promotes social inclusion, equality and social justice ” (The Advocacy Charter).
The Carers Centre employs a number of advocacy caseworkers who are responsible for providing carers and those they cared for with information, advice and practical support in the form of advocacy. Advocacy support is available to any carer, but the Centre has a number of specialist advocates who support carers of specific service user groups including:
Typically the advocate will assist carers and those they care for by liaising and negotiating with professionals on their behalf to secure services arranged by Social Services, Health, Education, Housing, Transport, Leisure and other organisations in the voluntary and independent sector.
